Sunscreens protect skin from ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn, premature aging, dark spots, and skin cancer. There are two main types: Mineral sunscreens: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They are often better tolerated by sensitive skin but may leave a white cast. Organic/chemical sunscreens: filters such as avobenzone, octocrylene, octisalate, and—outside the United States—newer filters such as ethylhexyl triazone, bemotrizinol, and bisoctrizole.
