API Description: Thalidomide is a medication originally marketed in the late 1950s as a sedative and treatment for morning sickness in pregnant women but was withdrawn in the early 1960s due to causing severe birth defects. It causes skeletal deformities such as limb malformations and other serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Despite this, thalidomide is currently used under strict controls to treat multiple myeloma (a type of cancer), erythema nodosum leprosum (a complication of leprosy), and some inflammatory conditions. It works by modulating the immune system and inflammation. The drug is known for its teratogenic effects and is strictly contraindicated in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant.
