It is primarily used for its bacteriostatic effect, which it achieves by reversibly binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit. This action blocks the attachment of aminoacyl tRNA to the ribosome acceptor site, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Tetracycline phosphate may also bind to the 50S ribosomal subunit and can alter the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, causing leakage of intracellular contents.
