API Description: Tacrine Hydrochloride Monohydrate is a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor primarily used in the treatment of mild to moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease. It works by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine. Tacrine was the first centrally acting cholinesterase inhibitor approved for Alzheimer's but its clinical use has become limited due to hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity) and other side effects. It has also been used to counter the effects of muscle relaxants and as a respiratory stimulant.
