API Description: Landiolol is a rapid-acting beta (β)-1 adrenergic receptor blocker that blocks the positive chronotropic effect of the beta-1 selective agonist norepinephrine. It works to reduce the heart rate, myocardial contractility, and conduction velocity. Compared to other beta-blockers, landiolol possesses unique pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, in that it has a rapid onset and short duration of action, and has a greater affinity for β-1 adrenergic receptors over β-2 receptors. First approved in Japan in 2002 for the treatment of intraoperative tachyarrhythmias, landiolol was approved in Canada in April 2024 and in the US in November 2024 to treat tachyarrhythmias and perioperative tachycardia, including atrial fibrillation.
