API Description: Aminolevulinic acid is a naturally occurring amino acid precursor in the heme biosynthesis pathway, used in photodynamic therapy for certain cancers and dermatological conditions. It functions by accumulating in abnormal cells and, upon activation by specific light wavelengths, produces reactive oxygen species that destroy targeted tissues. 5-aminolevulinic acid is the simplest delta-amino acid in which the hydrogens at the gamma position are replaced by an oxo group. It is metabolised to protoporphyrin IX, a photoactive compound which accumulates in the skin.
