API Description: Spiramycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic primarily used to treat various bacterial infections, as well as some parasitic infections like toxoplasmosis. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thus preventing peptide bond formation and translocation during protein synthesis. Spiramycin is bacteriostatic but can be bactericidal against highly sensitive strains. It is effective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some respiratory tract bacteria, mycoplasmas, chlamydiae, and also Toxoplasma gondii parasites. Medically, spiramycin is often used to treat toxoplasmosis in pregnant women to decrease the risk of fetal infection. It is used in various forms including oral, parenteral, and rectal. Although widely used in Europe, Canada, and Mexico, it is still considered experimental in the United States but can be obtained with special permission. It is also used by dentists and ENT specialists due to its high concentrations in bone and salivary glands.
